Sandhurst Eagles v Binfield Torpedoes 14/04/07

Sandhurst Eagles 3 - 1 Binfield Torpedoes

12.00 kick off.  Saturday 14th April 2007.  Venue : Sandhurst.  League Match.

Conditions Sunny, Hot.  Pitch firm

Attendance - 21.

Binfield Players : Adriano, Billy, Jamie, Josh, Louie, Michael,  Seb.

With Ollie and Angus missing the team was reduced to the bare bones, so no subs on a very hot day against one of the top teams - this was always going to be a tough game.

First Half.

The game was fairly evenly matched in the first half.  The Torpedoes took the lead from another well practiced corner, Michael firing the corner in and again Billy getting the vital touch to open the scoring. The boys played some good passing football, and Adriano and Josh played well in unfamiliar positions in defence. Louie was strong in his lone forward role and had a few half chances, and Seb and Billy battled for everything in midfield. Sandhurst were a good attacking unit and Jamie had to be on guard to fend off several good shots. With half time approaching and the boys starting to wilt in the heat Sandhurst scored an equalizer and the half ended 1- 1.

Second Half

Unfortunately the Torpedoes conceded a second goal very early in the second half so the game plan of conserving energy for a final push in the last 10 minutes was out of the window ! The boys fought for everything but the heat and the lack of subs was beginning to tell. Despite this they continued to press forward, Michael had the ball in the net only to be ruled out for an earlier hand ball. Seb and Louie ran themselves into the ground. Josh and Billy also worked tirelessly for the team, all the more remarkable after their birthday celebrations and late night the previous day. Eventually the Sandhurst pressure told and they scored a very good goal with a spectacular volley.  -  Jamie had no chance. Late in the half Adriano took a knock and unable to run had to go in goal and whilst there,  he produced the best save of the game to keep the score respectable. The final whistle went the boys had given everything but the opposition and the circumstances had proved too hard on this occasion.

After the match it was good to see that the boys were not too demoralised by the defeat and decided to have a water fight ... with most of the water justifiably aimed at the management.

Man of the Match - Michael

Goals : Billy

Binfield Torpedoes v Camberely Town Raiders 31/03/07

Binfield Torpedoes 2 - 2 Camberley Town Raiders.

10.30 kick off.  Saturday 31st March 2007.  Venue : Stubbs Lane.  League Match.

Conditions Sunny, Cool & Windy.  Pitch firm.

Attendance - 24.

Binfield Players : Adriano,  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

With the Torpedoes most influential player taking a well earned rest in his Alpine retreat, it meant that somebody had to "step up to the plate" and  stamp his mark on the game ....... today that person was Billy.

First Half

The match started with the Torpedoes a little sluggish and not quite at the pace of the game. Camberley were enjoying good possession, but slowly the Torpedoes started to get going. Louie and Seb battled hard and forced an early corner. Michael took the corner and hit a perfect cross deep into the penalty area. Ghosting in, unnoticed by the defenders, was Billy, who smacked a  volley into the back of the net. The Torpedoes grew in confidence but Camberley were not downhearted and fought back. Angus made three great tackles to stop attacks and Jamie was in control of his area with Ollie again running everywhere for the Torpedoes' cause. Adriano, Billy and Seb were battling in midfield, but just before half time a defensive mix up and some quick thinking by the Camberley attacker led to an equaliser. The half ended all square with everything to play for.

Second Half.

The Camberley late first half equalizer seemed to set the Torpedoes back, and only some wayward finishing stopped Camberley from taking the lead. Eventually the pressure told and Camberley scored the goal that their persistence deserved. The Torpedoes needed inspiration from somewhere and fast ! Adriano won a crucial tackle in the last third of the pitch - before he could release the ball he was knocked over and the ref gave a free kick. The management gave instructions for Billy to take the free kick. With his reputation from previous games this proved to be a very wise decision. From fully twenty-five yards out Billy powered the ball over the wall, hitting the inside of the post and over the line - a goal from nowhere to spark the Torpedoes back into action. Suddenly it was the Torpedoes that looked the more likely winners, Michael hit the bar, and when he sent over another great cross Louie leaped and powered a header that missed the goal by the narrowest of margins. The final whistle went and the crowd, mostly a large contingent from Camberley, applauded both teams off the pitch.

This had been a very entertaining game between two evenly matched sides. A game the Torpedoes might have won, could have quite easily have lost, and in the end, a draw seemed a fair result.

Man of the Match - Billy.

Goals - Billy (2)

Binfield Torpedoes v Ascot United Royals 24/03/07

Binfield Torpedoes 0 - 2 Ascot United Royals

10.30 kick off.  Saturday 24th March 2007.  Venue : Stubbs Lane.  League Match.

Conditions    Very Cold & Windy.  Pitch firm.

Attendance - 16.

Binfield Players : Adriano,  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Today the Torpedoes came up against the ultimate challenge the East Berks League can offer ... a match against the mighty Ascot Royals.

First Half

Despite losing the game, all of the boys should feel very proud of the effort they made against one of the top teams. Always up against the quick passing and movement of the opposition the Torpedoes made a game of it, and could have taken the lead when a shot smacked against the post. The Torpedoes worked hard defending but in attack could never quite get the final ball right to get a shot on... the Ascot defence being very solid. Although going a goal down, heads did not drop, and they fought hard.

Second Half

Ascot knew they still had work to do. The Torpedoes produced some good moves but eventually Ascot made the game safe, taking a two nil lead towards the end. The boys should not be downhearted with this reversal, they will not meet Ascot every week and have learnt that they can play against the best and give them a good game.

The team should get extra credit, as although losing the game, they still managed to pay remarkable attention to a lengthy post match team talk in near Siberian conditions.

Man of the Match - Louie.

Special mention  - Jamie - brave goalkeeping as usual.

Woodley Saints Lions vs Binfield Torpedoes 17/03/07

Woodley Saints Lions 0 - 4 Binfield Torpedoes.

10.45 kick off.  Saturday 17th March 2007.   Venue : Woodley.   League Match.

Conditions   Cloudy Cold & Dry.  Pitch firm.

Attendance - 32.

Binfield Players :  Adriano, Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh, Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

A new tactic from the management worked a treat today. Instead of waiting until half time the boys were given their "rocket" before the match started. As a consequence they took to the field fully committed and  ready for the challenge that lay ahead. What followed was a pleasure to witness as the Torpedoes produced one of their finest ever displays.

First Half.

Undaunted by a physically larger opposition the boys kept their formation and worked tirelessly for each other. The game started with the Torpedoes defending as Woodley forced some early corners and had a few long shots. The Torpedoes defence was not only solid, but passed the ball out to the midfield, who in turn got the ball quickly up to Louie in attack. Where necessary Angus and Ollie put safety first and kicked the ball into "row Z". In his lone attack role Louie was strong and did a brilliant job of keeping possession and bringing his midfield into play. An early goal came as Michael pressurised his defender, won the ball, centred to Louie, who cushioned the ball perfectly into Seb's path, who coolly slotted home for the opener. The goal boosted the Torpedoes' confidence and it wasn't long before  they increased their lead. Louie played Josh in for a run at goal, that he finished with a neat near post shot. Seb, Michael, Billy and Adriano were tackling everything that moved and this backed up by Ollie and Angus in defence meant that the opposition were finding it hard to break through. Jamie held a powerful long shot, and tipped another over the bar. It was good to see him dominate his penalty area and marshal his defence. The third goal came as Louie received an intelligent pass from Seb, he held the ball up and drew the foul from the defender. The ref gave the free kick. Billy placed the ball, composed himself and curled a powerful free kick over the wall into the top corner - a great individual goal to complete a great first half team performance.

Second Half.

Adriano moved to defence with Ollie moving up to midfield. Ollie had a good run at goal and was unlucky not to get a shot on target. Adriano's tackling was a major factor in the team's victory - he may have been one of the smallest players on the pitch, but his tackles sure packed a punch.  The opposition seemed genuinely scared of him. The team continued to play well and kept Woodley at bay, only once did they have a chance in the second half, but Jamie rushed from his line to bravely dive for the ball to snuff out the goal attempt. The pre match corner practice nearly worked for Michael as he hit the cross bar direct from a corner. The final goal epitomized the way the Torpedoes had played the whole game, great team work. Another crunching tackle by Adriano won the ball, he passed to Michael who took the ball forward. Challenged by a defender he back heeled the ball to Billy and continued his run. Billy hit a first time pass down the line to where Michael had moved. Michael's speed took him first to the ball. He went past the last defender and slipped the ball square to Josh who rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net. Sounds simple, but from Adriano's tackle to the ball in the back of the net took no more than 10 seconds - a fantastic team goal.

The final whistle went, the management were full of praise, the boys had raised their game to a new level. Any nine of the boys could have been Man of the Match, birthday boy Seb getting a loud and enthusiastic rendition of "Happy Birthday to you" while picking up the trophy.

Man of the Match - Seb

Goals - Seb,  Billy,  Josh (2)

Binfield Torpedoes vs California Bears 10/03/07

Binfield Torpedoes 0 - 0 California Bears

10h45 Kick off, Saturday 10th March 2007.   Venue : Stubbs Lane.  League Match

Conditions :  Sunny.  Pitch firm.

Attendance: 21.

Binfield Players : Adriano  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

The Portuguese weather man correctly predicted a sunny and bright day, a shame he couldn't have predicted the first half  then we could have had an extra half hour in bed.

First Half

The boys didn't seem to be in the mood for this one.  Right from the off they were second to the ball and were put under concerted pressure by a skilful and quick passing side. Despite some excellent play from Josh, Seb and Billy, the Torpedoes were pinned in their own half for most of the time. Angus made three or four last ditch tackles as the Torpedoes midfield was easily passed by good passing and movement from the opposition. It was one way traffic, but as ever, when the Torpedoes are in trouble at the back you can always count on Jamie. Rushing from his line to block a shot, tipping another shot round the corner, and a brave and spectacular double save which stopped a certain goal. The half ended with the Torpedoes only giving the odd glimpse of the play we know they can produce.

Second Half

After an injection of motivation during the half time team talk the boys took to the field as if transformed. Louie playing up front and holding the ball well, linked up with his midfield, and helped give the Torpedoes much more possession. Ollie was back to his usual self - tackling anything that moved. Michael, Seb and Billy got stuck in and started running directly at the opposition and it was good to see the Torpedoes applying  pressure on the California goal. A long shot from Josh was narrowly wide, Michael broke through for a shot that the keeper saved, and Josh sent over a perfectly practiced corner that Seb just hit inches wide. Despite being one of the smallest players on the pitch, Adriano was proving to be the "hard man" of the defence - nothing got past him and every tackle was timed to perfection. In the end a draw was a fair result, California won the first half on points, with the Torpedoes miles better in the second half.

A good attendance of twenty humans, and apparently one Smurf, applauded both teams from the pitch.

Man of the match - Angus. The last line of defence.

Binfield Torpedoes vs Bracknell Arrows 03/03/2007

Binfield Torpedoes 1 - 3 Bracknell Arrows

10.30 kick off  Saturday 3rd March 2007   Venue : Bracknell  / Cup Match

ConditionsSunny, pitch muddy but firm

Attendance - 20

The Torpedoes cup run finally came to an end in an exciting game against a very good Bracknell team. With Stubbs lane still waterlogged the Torpedoes gave up home advantage as the match was moved to Bracknell's ground.

First Half

The first fifteen minutes were fairly even, with both teams creating some early chances, but Bracknell looking the more dangerous going forward. The Torpedoes conceded a strange opening goal as the ball seemed to go in direct from a well taken corner - Bracknell soon increased their lead with a good second goal. The boys were finding it tough against a strong tackling team.

Second half

Started with the boys two nil down and playing uphill on an energy sapping pitch - a daunting task lay ahead. However, the Torpedoes are made of sterner stuff and they gave it everything to get back into the match. Some great passing, good running and determined defending kept the Torpedoes in the game. A slick passing move involving four or five players eventually led to Billy stroking the ball home to give the Torpedoes a sight of a way back into the game. For a short while Bracknell's confidence seemed to dip, but the Torpedoes couldn't quite manage an equaliser, and were hit on the break as they committed players forward in search of the equaliser.

The game ended 3 - 1 to Bracknell, the boys should not feel too bad as they had played well, and will have another opportunity to play Bracknell, in the league later in the season ..  but today wasn't going to be their day.

Special mention - Jamie   - A remarkable triple save in the second half.

Binfield Players : Adriano, Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Goals : - Billy

Man of the match - Billy - Determination and a goal.

Whitegrove Rangers vs Binfield Torpedoes 03/02/2007

Whitegrove Rangers  1 : 2  Binfield Torpedoes

9.15 kick off.   Saturday 3rd Feb 2006.  Venue : Whitegrove.    League Match.

ConditionsSunny & Cold, pitch firm.

Attendance : 20

After the disappointment of last week the Torpedoes managed to grind out a hard fought victory in an evenly contested match.

First half.

The Torpedoes started well with good passing and possession but didn't turn their early pressure into any clear cut chances. After a while Whitegrove got into the match and forced good saves from Jamie as the game went from end to end in search of an opening. Whitegrove had one very fast and skilful forward, and their game plan seemed to be to win the ball and pass it to him.  However, today he came up against the tackling machine 'Ollie' .... and this was where the battle was going to be won or lost. Ollie seemed to grow in stature with each tackle, and his "never say die" attitude was infectious as the whole team followed his lead and "got stuck in". When the attacker did get past, his brother Angus, was on hand to clear the ball to safety. A Torpedoes attack mid way through the half ended with Adriano winning a crucial tackle to give himself a clear cut chance that he did not waste, placing the ball beyond the advancing keeper for the opening goal. The goal seemed to provoke Whitegrove into sustained attacks, and the midfield of Billy, Louie, Michael, Seb and Josh were having to defend well to keep Whitegrove at bay. Whitegrove pressure finally wore down the defence and in a lapse moment they scored a good equaliser. The half ended all square with everything to play for.

Second Half.

The game seemed to be swinging Whitegrove's way, but the Torpedoes dug deep and chased everything. Louie made some great tackles, and together with Billy, Michael, Angus and Seb ran their socks off for the Torpedoes' cause. The game turned a bit scrappy with both sides battling for possession but slowly the Torpedoes started to win the 50/50 challenges and were finishing the stronger. A good run by Josh forced a save,  another run from Josh resulted in a free kick to the Torpedoes just outside the area. Josh took the free kick, which hit the wall and rebounded to Michael who hit a first time shot that the keeper could not hold.... on hand was Seb to flick the ball over the line for another one of his "poachers specials". The Torpedoes were in sight of victory, but not before one final scare as the fast Whitetrove forward found himself one on one with Jamie. Out of nowhere appeared Josh to get a tackle in, but just to make sure Jamie bravely rushed from his line to take out Josh, the attacker and the ball !!  In the closing stages Adriano ran the whole length of the pitch and put over a fantastic cross that Seb just failed to get on target at the far post, but a 3 - 1 score line would have been unfair on Whitegrove.

Special mention must be given to the far side linesman who unashamedly gave the Torpedoes every throw-in before being 'removed' from his position at half time.

Binfield Players : Adriano, Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Goals : - Adriano,  Seb.

Man of the match - Jamie.  Brave dive to save the day.

Binfield Arrows - Binfield Torpedoes 27/01/2007

Binfield Arrows 3 - 0 Binfield Torpedoes

10.30 kick off.  Saturday 27th Jan 2007.   Venue : Stubbs Lane.  League Match.

Conditions :  Sunny & Cold.  Pitch firm.

Attendance : 30

A twenty two game unbeaten run, stretching back over a year, finally came to an end at Stubbs Lane today. The boys should take great pride in this record which will be hard to match, but with the Torpedoes anything is possible!  After the heroics of the Torpedoes debut "A" League match the boys were brought back down to earth after this reversal.

First Half

The team started slowly and they seemed a little in awe of the opposition and gave them too much time on the ball. It wasn't long before they were 0-2 down as the Arrows showed more determination, and a quicker tempo. The Torpedoes had a couple of chances to score, hitting the post, and the best of which was acrobatically cleared off the line with a remarkable overhead kick. But more good movement ended up with the opposition scoring another well worked goal to take a 3-0 lead.

Second Half

At 0-3 down the Torpedoes supporters were worried that the game may become a rout. But the boys heads did not drop and their second half performance was miles better than the earlier half. Tackles were now going in and the opposition found it harder to get through the Torpedoes defence. More movement up front and good passing and running off the ball made the second half more of a contest, so much so that the boys should take heart from holding a good team to 0 -0 in the second half. It will do the boys no harm to lose to a team that played better on the day and they accepted their defeat with dignity as the Arrows were magnanimous in their victory.

Points to note.  Calls for the managers' heads are a bit premature !   Yellow bibs - Yuk !!   Torpedo management amazingly managed to stay within their technical area.  The ref had a poor game but is a man of high moral standing and could not be bribed, despite numerous attempts. Torpedoes and Arrows Mums mingled together and talked "shopping".

Binfield Players : Adriano  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Man of the Match - Josh.  (At three nil down with one minute to go he was still running his socks off.)

Pinewood Pumas v Binfield Torpedoes 13/01/2007

Pinewood Pumas 0: 2 Binfield Torpedoes.

10.40 kick off. Saturday 13th Jan 2007. Venue : Pinewood. League Match

Conditions Mild Cloudy & Drizzle. Pitch muddy.

Attendance : 26.

Binfield Players : Adriano, Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh, Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

The Torpedoes played exceptionally well in their debut 'A' division match to pull off a remarkable victory against the mighty Pinewood Pumas.
First Half.

The game started with the management and Torpedoes supporters more nervous than the boys, who appeared calm, fully motivated and ready for the battle ahead. The first ten minutes were played predominantly in the Torpedoes half as Pinewood looked for an early goal. Any defensive worries were soon put to rest as Angus and then Ollie made crunching tackles and clearances that seemed to fill the whole team with confidence. Ollie was everywhere chasing down his man and not flinching in the tackle, Angus was always on hand to clear the ball to safety and Pinewood were kept at bay. The Torpedo midfield now started to push forward, and a great move from Josh, Billy and Louie set up Adriano for a shot that was blocked at the last minute. Michael had a powerful run that forced the play towards the Pinewood goal. Pinewood then pressed forward in numbers, but again the Torpedoes defence held firm. A quick counter attack involving Seb, Billy and Josh put Adriano in with a chance that he did not waste, beating the goalkeeper from six yards to give the Torpedoes the lead. The half time whistle went with the Torpedoes one up, but with the management warning of a Pinewood backlash.

Second Half.

The Pinewood onslaught duly came. Jamie made three agile and brave close range saves to deny Pinewood a certain goal. Jamie then pushed a shot round the post with another great dive. Pinewood worked the ball well and created numerous chances to equalise, but a combination of wayward finishing, good luck, and more solid defending from Ollie and Angus kept Pinewood out. The entire midfield of Josh, Michael, Billy, Seb and Louie held a line in front of goal to break down moves and get vital blocks in. Pinewood seemed to be getting frustrated that all their pressure had not produced the equaliser and started to shoot from distance - which did not trouble Jamie in goal. Again Pinewood pushed forward, committing more players up front, when the move broke down Michael quickly took the ball forward into midfield and fired a long pass that put Adriano clean through one on one with the Pinewood goalie. Time seemed to stand still, as Adriano calmly drew the goal keeper off his line before placing the ball in the corner of the net for a classic break-away goal. The two goal cushion took the pressure off the Torpedoes and they played the rest of the game settling for their hard fought victory.
The final whistle went. The management appeared stunned and for a short while were speechless. A close call between Ollie and Jamie for Man of the Match emphasized the pressure Pinewood had put on the Torpedoes. Ollie got the final nod and just about managed the energy to lift the new trophy.

Goals : - Adriano. 2 very special goals for different reasons.

Man of the Match - Ollie the tackling machine..

Binfield Torpedoes v Pinewood Panthers 16/12/06

Binfield Torpedoes 3 - 1 Pinewood Panthers

9.30 kick off.  Saturday 16th Dec 2006.   Venue : Stubbs Lane.  League Match

Conditions :  Sunny & Cold.  Pitch muddy.

Attendance : 18

Binfield Players : Adriano  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

First Half.

The Torpedoes rubber stamped their promotion to the 'A' division with another solid performance. Josh scored the opening goal within the first minute with another special strike that is becoming his trademark - he doesn't do tap ins !  Pinewood had chances to level, Jamie diving to his right to push a firm shot round the post. Michael and Billy were defending well and Ollie, Angus and Louie were all action in midfield. Louie had a half chance that went just wide as the Torpedoes continued to attack. Billy showed a good turn of speed and strength to shepherd a Pinewood move away from Jamie's goal. A great passing move between Louie and Ollie ended with a shot from Josh that hit the bull's-eye in the adjacent archery field, just to prove he is fallible after all.

Second Half.

Jamie was released from goal with Adriano and Louie sharing the goal keeping duties. Josh won the ball in midfield and sent Michael through on goal, he saw Seb in a better position, passed, and Seb calmly placed the ball across the advancing keeper, proving you don't have to break the back of the net to score. Ollie went on one of his powerful breaks and fed Billy to strike a firm shot that rebounded off the post.  Adriano was on hand to finish off the move to give the Torpedoes a three - nil lead. Pinewood refused to give up and scored a very good goal themselves. The final whistle went and the boys celebrated a hard fought victory.

All nine of the squad should feel very proud of their achievements this first half of the season. Unbeaten in nine games, they have played attacking football, showed great teamwork and spirit and have always been very entertaining to watch. Special mention must go to Steve and Trevor who have turned a real mixed bunch of characters into a great little team. The Torpedoes fully deserve their promotion to the 'A' division and we hope they will meet the new challenge with their usual enthusiasm and sense of fun.

Goals : - Josh, Seb,  Adriano.

Men of the match - Adriano  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh, Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.  (all of them !)

Attendance - 22.

A game of two halves, one bad, one good.

First Half.

In the first half the Torpedoes were a shadow of the team that had played so well the previous week. The boys didn't seem to be "up for this one" and the opposition were quicker and more determined. Apart from a couple of half chances the play was predominantly in or around the Torpedoes' penalty area. Pinewood were putting so much pressure on the defence that Ollie, Angus were almost overwhelmed. Jamie was quick to spot the danger - rushing from his goal to clear the ball like a sweeper. The Torpedoes were on the receiving end of concerted attacks and only a combination of last ditch defending and wayward shooting saved the boys from going two or three goals down. Even when Pinewood got past Jamie the ball came back off the bar to be scrambled to safety. The management were praying for the half time whistle.

Second Half.

With a stern half time team talk and a few home truths the team took to the field as if transformed !  Adriano slotting in at left back, and to his credit kerbing his normal attacking nature, stopped all the Pinewood attacks down the left. Josh helping his defence was starting to control the game from the back. Michael and Billy looked different players from the first half. Louie, Ollie and Seb were bossing the midfield. Michael was now driving straight for goal whenever he got the ball and was unlucky not to score himself before helping get the ball into the penalty area where Louie struck a powerful left footer into the roof of the net. The goal seemed to demoralise the opposition and the Torpedoes continued to press forward to make the game safe. Seb must have thought he'd scored only for a desperate save to paw the ball off the line to safety. Finally, Billy broke down the left and sent over the kind of cross that every defence hates, hard, low and six yards out from goal. The defender missed the ball, waiting at the far post was Seb, who calmly stroked the ball into the back of the net for a very cool finish.

The final whistle went and the Torpedoes march on into the quarter finals.... with the distinct possibility of playing a much more local team.

Binfield Players : Adriano  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Goals : - Louie.  Seb.

Man of the match - Michael.

Binfield Torpedoes - Lower Early Predators 02/12/2006

Binfield Torpedoes 3 - 1 Lower Early Predators

10.00 kick off.   Saturday 2nd Dec 2006.   Venue : Stubbs Lane

Conditions :  Sunny & Cold.  Pitch wet, very muddy

Attendance - 25

Having not played a competitive game for three weeks there was a slight concern that the Torpedoes may have been a bit rusty or not match fit. Maybe the rest did them good, as they produced their best team performance so far this season.

First Half.

The game started off brightly with both teams showing their attacking intentions. A good move from Lower Earley put their striker one on one with Jamie. He raced from his goal line to bravely gather the ball, only to concede a harsh free kick for being outside his area. The resulting free kick was played into the box and volleyed home at the far post. Going a goal down did not affect the boys' attitude, the heads did not drop.... they were determined to get back into the game. The Torpedoes have scored many goals this season, but they will find it hard to match the equalizer that Josh produced midway through the first half. Picking the ball up in his own penalty area he advanced the whole length of the pitch, skipping round tackles, using his speed and strength to keep the ball, before unleashing a left foot shot that flew into the back of the net. Five minutes later, helped by good runs off the ball, from Adriano and Billy, Josh scored his second and near identical goal, just to prove the first one was no fluke. The first half ended with the Torpedoes in front.

Second Half.

With the pitch doing a very good impression of a First World War battlefield, it was the Torpedoes who had the necessary power and muscle required in midfield. The team now seemed to click, and the strength of Michael, Louie, Seb, Ollie and Billy in midfield was proving too much for an opposition that seemed to be tiring on the heavy surface. The Torpedoes were winning the midfield battle and creating chance after chance. For long periods the Torpedoes were camped in the Lower Earley half. Michael had a shot tipped round the post with a spectacular one handed save. Josh tried to curl the ball into the top corner, and he must have thought he'd got his hat-trick only for another remarkable save to keep the game close. Billy, Ollie and Seb all had good shots, Michael had a header on target but they just couldn't get past the Lower Earley keeper, who was having an inspired game. There were at least five goal mouth scrambles with Adriano unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions, with the ball sticking in the mud. Finally in the closing stages the Torpedoes made the game safe as another goal mouth scramble was converted by Seb, his brand new white boots proving a sound investment.

Special mention must be given to Angus who easily gave his best performance in a Torpedo shirt. Great positional play, determined tackling, and covering at the back, not afraid to see the ball out for a throw or a corner ensuring that Jamie's goal was protected. His partnership at the back with Ollie was the solid platform the Torpedoes needed to go forward in search of goals. On another day he would surely have won Man of the Match..... but both Josh's goals were a bit special !

Binfield Players : Adriano  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Binfield Torpedoes v Sandhurst Falcons 11/11/06

10.30 kick off.   Saturday 11th Nov 2006.   Venue : Stubbs Lane

Conditions :  Sunny & Cold.  Pitch firm

Attendance - 25

A comfortable win for the Torpedoes with the whole team playing well.

Unlike the Torpedoes normal style of play they started very brightly, with excellent movement and passing straight from the off. It didn't take long for Seb to slot home a well worked goal, quickly followed by another close range goal from Billy. With the game already looking over after 10 minutes the Manager decided to shuffle the pack on a regular basis with all the players having a stint in unfamiliar positions. This eventually led to Angus leading the line as a striker, laying off the ball to Billy, who hit one of his trademark "specials" to give the Torpedoes a three nil lead. The team continued to dominate the match forcing numerous corners, but couldn't increase their goal tally. The team defended confidently and Jamie had one of the quietest games he'll ever play. The whistle went and the Torpedoes had won without really getting out of 2nd gear. In fact, it was probably the Manager that expended most energy sorting out the subs and shuffling the positions !

Binfield Players : Adriano  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Goals : - Seb,  Billy (2.)

Man of the match – Seb

Bracknell Bullets v Binfield Torpedoes 07/11/2006

F.C. Bracknell Bullets 1 : 3 Binfield Torpedoes

10.00 kick off.   Saturday 7th October 2006.  Venue : Farley Wood.

Conditions : Sunny & Warm. Pitch, heavy.

Attendance - 24.

The first half passing display was back to the standard achieved in some of the matches last season, a good away win for the Torpedoes against a tough hard working team. Well done both teams for an entertaining game.

First half.

Playing uphill on a heavy pitch meant the boys had to put in extra effort to get the ball forward, but quick movement of feet and mind created many chances for the Torpedoe midfielders and strikers. Michael and Adriano combined well down the right earning several corners and shots. Josh made great runs on the left forcing two good early saves at the near post. Josh's next forward surge produced a perfectly weighted cross for Adriano to guide home to open the scoring. Strong midfield play from Billy and Seb, and great sweeper play by the ever alert Ollie and Angus kept Bracknell at bay... Jamie having a fairly quiet first half. Crisp passing between Michael, Seb and Louie set up Adriano for his second well taken goal.....  Adriano looking every part a natural finisher.

Second Half..

Billy and Seb started the second half in defence pushing Ollie and Angus up into midfield, and the Torpedoes kept moving forward with purpose. Ollie was unlucky when his goal bound long range shot was deflected wide at the last minute.  However, Bracknell were now starting to have more of the ball and were beginning to look threatening. Bracknell then attacked down the left, and the ball broke to their forward, he hit a perfect shot, destined for the top corner. Jamie launched himself, and in full flight with one hand tipped the ball over the bar, this was his best save, so far, this season. Concentration levels at the back were beginning to lapse, at one point a Torpedoe defender seemed more interested in his brother taking a penalty on the adjacent pitch !!  Josh and Michael were now in defence, but with the midfield tiring on the heavy pitch and the Torpedoes defending too deep,  pressure was being invited that eventually led to a Bracknell goal. It was going to be a nervous last ten minutes for the Torpedoes, but the defence tightened up, and more good forward play from Adriano and Billy set up Seb to blast a shot against the bar that bounced down into the danger zone. First to react was Louie, who drove the ball into the back of the net from close range, for his first Torpedo goal. The relief amongst the rest of the Torpedoes was evident as the whole team celebrated with Louie by diving on top of him. When Louie eventually emerged he was wearing a smile that could be seen the other side of Bracknell !!

Fortunately for the boys a police woman interrupted what could have been a lengthy post match team talk. (To ask that poorly parked cars be moved.)
The management distributed the chocolate and ran off to avoid the long arm of the law.

Binfield Players : Angus (capt) Adriano, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Goals : Adriano (2), Louie.

Man of the match - Josh - "Reliable as ever"

Binfield Torpedoes v Whitegrove Hornets 04/11/06

Binfield Torpedoes 3 - 1 Whitegrove Hornets

Cup game

9.00 kick off.   Saturday 4th Nov 2006.  Venue : Stubbs Lane

Conditions :  Sunny & Cold.  Pitch firm

Attendance - 20

A good win for the Torpedoes.... is this the start of a Cup run ??

First half

On a cold morning it took a few minutes for the boys to warm up, but after a short while the team were passing the ball well on a frosty surface. An intelligent pass from Josh, a quick turn and shot from Michael opened the score for the Torpedoes. More good passing moves followed involving Billy, Adriano and Josh and the Torpedoes were unlucky not to increase their lead. Seb and Louie were patrolling midfield and Adriano was covering every blade of grass, full of energy as usual. Ollie and Angus were showing a solid defensive display working as a partnership .. was it telepathy ? Strong forward play from Josh, Seb and Adriano forced the ball into the area where Billy reacted sharply to score a poacher's goal. The half ended with the Torpedoes well worth their two goal lead.

Second Half

Jamie had had very little to do in the first half and as a consequence was frozen !  The Management decided it was time to give him another run out as a striker with Adriano taking over in goal. Surprisingly Jamie was not the "battering -ram striker"  the management thought he might be, but a striker with a fast turn of speed and a deft touch, holding the ball up and linking well with his midfield team mates. Jamie was unlucky not to score with a neat chip, but he did help lay the ball off for Billy to hit another of his powerful long range shots into the net to give the Torpedoes a three goal lead. Adriano was proving a reliable replacement in goal and his kicking and handling were excellent. He could do nothing to stop the shot from Whitegrove that ended a good passing move from the opposing team. As the game started to slow, Louie still seemed full of energy and his forceful runs nearly helped the Torpedoes increase the lead. Ollie was moving the ball forward well, and when the defence needed help Angus was always on hand to steer the ball away from the danger area.

The final whistle went and the Torpedoes name will go into the hat for the next round.

Binfield Players : Adriano (capt.)  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Goals : - Michael,  Billy (2.)

Man of the match - Jamie.  (The goalie is a striker as well !)

Ascot United Racing v Binfield Torpedoes 21/10/06

Ascot United Racing. 1 : 1 Binfield Torpedoes

9.00 kick off.   Saturday 21st Oct 2006.  Venue : Ascot

Conditions : Overcast & Mild, pitch soft

Attendance - 15

The Torpedoes produced a Jeckyl and Hyde performance, moments of brilliance and moments that were not so brilliant. However, they can take a lot of encouragement from the way they fought back against a good opposing team, and that they created so many chances that could have given them a win.

First half

The early start must have affected the Torpedoes, with the odd exception, the players seemed lethargic. The tackling and chasing down of opponents was almost non existent, the energy levels and concentration were not up to their usual high standards. So much so that Ascot seemed to walk the ball into the back of the net unchallenged to take an early lead. Even going a goal down did not wake the team up, and it was a full ten minutes before the game started to swing back in favour of the Torpedoes. Slowly Billy, Louie, Michael and Seb were winning the 50 / 50 balls and Josh was making good progress in his favoured left wing position. Adriano was getting into good positions and was unlucky not to score with two good chances, Billy put a shot agonisingly wide, and Josh went very close with a long range free kick. Eventually Adriano had another chance that he placed into the bottom corner to level the scores, another well taken goal that is becoming his trademark. Ascot were proving a tough opposition and their tackling and defensive play was very impressive. Jamie had to make sure of his positioning to be in the right place to stop a powerful shot, and he also reacted sharply to turn another goal bound shot round the post for a corner. The half ended all square.

Second Half

Ascot started the second half well, but Ollie and Angus were running everywhere, closing down and tackling anything that moved. Ollie in particular kept his head when others were panicking, and his no nonsense defending and good distribution calmed things down at vital moments, and the whole team started to raise their game. Josh was again the power in midfield moving the ball quickly up to the attackers. Billy was making strong forward runs and had a shot that hit the side netting and Michael had a half chance that went just wide. Seb and Louie were now getting stuck into the opposition and the game was heating up, with chances at both ends. Jamie made another great save, diving bravely at the feet of an attacker, and in the closing stages Michael had a shot from distance that was arrowing for the top corner, only to see an amazing save by the Ascot goalie thwart him, Adriano just failing to get the rebound on target. The final whistle went, and both teams seemed relieved that they had not lost rather than disappointed about not winning..

Various excuses were banded around for the first ten minute lethargic spell.  1.) The early start.  2.) The drizzle.  3.) Late nights.  4.) The long grass !  5.) The slightly smaller pitch.  ...   not to mention the fact that Ascot were a very good unit and they did not let the Torpedoes settle into their normal passing game.

Binfield Players : Adriano, Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Goals : - Adriano.

Man of the match - Ollie.  (Calm and confident in defence.)

Binfield Torpedoes v Ascot United Aces 14/10/06

Binfield Torpedoes  4 : 3 . Ascot United Aces

10.30 kick off.   Saturday 14th Oct 2006.  Venue : Stubbs Lane

Conditions : Sunny & Warm, pitch soft

Attendance - 22.

After fifteen minutes it looked like a comfortable game for the Torpedoes, nearing the end the nails were almost all bitten off.

First half

Before the match "Mr. Motivator" had the boys well and truly wound up with his "wrestling routine", so much so that the boys came out of the traps like lightning. Michael chased his defender down, forced an error, nicked the ball from the goal keeper and tapped in from close range. Billy then broke down the left, stroked a perfect pass to set up Josh for a clinical left foot finish. Then Josh turned provider setting up Adriano for another good finish to give the Torpedoes a dream start. Louie was dominating the centre of midfield with his tenacious tackling and intelligent short passing. Seb, Ollie and Angus kept most Ascot attacker's at bay, and Jamie was having a fairly quiet game. Ascot then attacked down the left and a quality cross was neatly flicked past Jamie for a good goal. The Torpedoes finished the half 3 - 1 to the good.

 Second Half

The late first half Ascot goal seemed to give them belief that all might not be lost, and they threw the kitchen sink at the Torpedoes defence. Ascot pulled another goal back and the Torpedoes confidence seemed to dip. Billy gave the Torpedoes a huge boost with a superb left foot strike to ease the tension and restore the two goal advantage. Still Ascot sort a way back into the game and despite a brave dive, from Jamie, at the feet of an attacker, Ascot pulled the score back to 4 - 3. Nerves were now being stretched, however, Michael, Seb and Ollie were defending well and Angus again was finding the vital tackle when required and would not be beaten. Towards the end Adriano had a great dipping shot that was well saved by the Ascot keeper.

The Torpedoes were pleased to hear the final whistle. They knew they had been in a game that had started so well, but could have gone horribly wrong. Credit to Ascot for never giving up. Well done both teams.

Binfield Players : Adriano, Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Goals : - Michael, Josh, Adriano, Billy.

Man of the match - Adriano.  (Ran his socks off for the Torpedoes.)

Binfield Torpedoes v Finchampstead Royals 23/09/06

Binfield Torpedoes  5 : 0 . Finchampstead Royals

10.30 kick off.   Saturday 23rd Sept 2006.  Venue : Stubbs Lane

Conditions : Sunny & Warm, pitch soft

Attendance - 18

Both management and spectators started the morning wondering which Torpedoe team would turn up, the one of the previous game, or the one that we know can play a stylish passing game.... fortunately the latter, and the Torpedoes supporters had much to cheer about. The history between the two teams in previous meetings had always been close, with Finchampstead proving to be a "bogey team" for the Torpedoes .... until today.

First half

An early goal from Michael, cutting in from the right to strike a crisp shot that buried itself into the corner of the net, was just the start the Torpedoes needed. The game settled down with good end to end play before Michael, Louie and Josh combined in midfield, putting Josh through on goal with a powerful run, to score a goal reminiscent of Roy Keane in his prime. Finchampstead now urgently sought a way back into the game, but again Jamie was in control of his area and his full blooded dive at the feet of an attacker set down a marker that he was determined to keep another clean sheet. Jamie was helped in his effort for a clean sheet by more excellent defensive play by Ollie and Angus who won vital tackles to stop further attacks. The first half ended with the Torpedoes deservedly ahead.

Second Half

The second half started with Seb, Adriano and Billy controlling midfield. Josh, now in attack, did a neat back heel to put Seb in for a strike at goal that hit the post, only for Adriano to sweep the ball into the net for his first goal as a Torpedoe. Three nil up meant only one thing - time to release Jamie !! - with Michael taking over in goal. Billy was now enjoying plenty of space in midfield and was making intelligent runs into the corners to put over great crosses, one of which Jamie just failed to connect with. Jamie and Louie were making sure Finchampstead were kept at bay and Jamie showed good skill to beat his man and also put in a good cross. Billy got his deserved goal as he reacted sharply to a goalkeeping error to score from close range. Finchampstead were now ready for the full time whistle, but not before Adriano collected the ball just outside the area, advanced unchallenged to smash in the Torpedoes fifth and final goal.

The Torpedoes had played as a team and played very well, but you had to feel sorry for Finchampstead, nothing had gone right for them.

Binfield Players : Josh (capt) Adriano, Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Goals : - Michael, Josh, Billy, Adriano (2).

Man of the match - Louie.  (A great debut for the Torpedoes.)

Ashridge Park v Binfield Torpedoes 16/09/06

Ashridge Park 0 : 1 Binfield Torpedoes

9.00 kick off.   Saturday 16th Sept 2006.   Venue : Cantley Park.

Conditions : Cloudy & Cool, pitch firm.

Attendance - 17.

A great goal keeping display from Jamie, taking full command of his area and making positive and brave decisions. This backed up by the ever reliable Josh in defence and the tackling twins kept a clean sheet for the Torpedoes. Otherwise a match of few chances generally bogged down in midfield with the two teams cancelling each other out. The match finally swung the Torpedoes way when Seb was in the right place to punish a defensive mix up from very close range. Ashridge can count themselves a bit unlucky !

For the Torpedoes the highlight of the morning was each being given a new pair of  Binfield F.C. socks !!

Goals :- Seb.

Binfield Players :  Michael (capt) Adriano, Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh, Ollie, Seb.

Men of the match - Angus & Ollie   (The tackling machines - both of them !.)

Binfield Torpedoes v Whitegrove Rangers 09/09/06

Binfield Torpedoes 1 : 1 Whitegrove Rangers

11.45 kick off.   Saturday 9th Sept 2006.   Venue : Stubbs Lane.

Conditions : Sunny & Warm, pitch firm.

Attendance - 20.

Binfield Players :  Seb.(capt) Adriano, Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh, Michael,  Ollie.

Despite going a goal down against a tough team, the Torpedoes proved their resilience as they raised their game to gain a hard earned point ....and could have nicked all three in the last minute.

First Half

The Torpedoes were mainly on the back foot, good defensive play from Adriano and Josh kept early Whitegrove attacks at bay. Jamie made a fantastic save, bravely diving at the feet of a Whitegrove attacker, and stopped a certain goal. Whitegrove then missed another good chance as the Torpedoes rode their luck. A good move between Michael and Adriano managed to get a half chance shot at goal that was just wide. Another Torpedo attack was well defended by Whitegrove and the ball was forced out for a Torpedoe corner. With the Torpedoes committing too many players forward for the corner, it resulted in a fast break away, and a cool finish to give Whitegrove the lead that their first half performance deserved.

Second Half

The boys heads did not drop, instead the exact opposite, they matched Whitegrove tackle for tackle - with excellent defensive and positional play by Josh. Ollie and Angus were giving as good as they got against a hard tackling and physical opposition. (All tackles from both sides were strong but fair.) Seb was now on, linking up midfield and attack, and the passing was beginning to flow through his quick thinking and unselfish play. Ollie and Adriano forced a corner with persistent closing down of the Whitegrove defence. Michael took the corner, but instead of firing it into the six yard box, he found Billy unmarked in a deeper position just outside the area. Billy was quickly closed down, but with a combination of skill and strength he turned his defender and lashed an unstoppable left foot shot into the Whitegrove goal.

In the closing stages both teams had chances but the Torpedoes seemed to be on top, and Adriano was desperately unlucky not to score as his shot hit the post and was cleared to safety by the Whitegrove defence.

Goals - Billy.

Man of the match - Angus. (The tackling machine.)
