Pinewood Panthers vs Binfield Torpedoes 22/09/07Pinewood Panthers 0 - 4 Binfield Torpedoes
9.00 kick off. Saturday 22nd Sept 2007. Venue : Pinewood. League Match. Conditions : Mild. Pitch firm. Attendance - 28. Binfield Players : Adriano, Billy, Brandon, Jamie, Josh, Louie, Michael, Seb, Steven. In the previous two games the Torpedoes showed glimpses of what might happen if everything clicked - today was the day that all their hard work started to pay off. First Half. Despite the early start, the boys were up for this game, generally first to the ball, and attacking with vision and pace. The first twenty minutes went by and the Torpedoes management must have wondered why the game was still nil nil. An early goal mouth scramble ended in a shot going wide when it looked easier to score. Louie, was holding the ball up well and bringing his team mates into the game, epitomised by a great lay off to Michael, who shot over the bar. The Pinewood keeper made a great save when a Torpedoe corner caused panic in the defence. Steven and Seb were defending well, and Billy was causing loads of problems on the left, getting into great positions and putting over crosses that were crying out for a finish. Jamie was having a quiet game, but needed to be alert to rush from his line to bravely dive at the feet of an attacker. Brandon had a shot from distance that the keeper tipped over the bar, more importantly his running and passing were exceptional. The deadlock was finally broken as Louie, Josh and Adriano combined well for Billy to get a shot on goal that the keeper could only parry... quite what "last ditch defender Seb" was doing twelve inches from the opposition goal line was totally irrelevant as he calmly nudged the ball into the net to put the Torpedoes one up. Holding on to the advantage was vital, so when the Pinewood striker broke through to be one on one with Jamie, the hard fought lead was looking a bit fragile. No need to worry, Jamie came off his line, got his positioning exactly right, and produced a spectacular dive and one handed save to push the ball wide of the post. This save not only did Jamie the world of good but filled the whole team with confidence. Second Half. The Torpedoes started the second half at the same high tempo, the numbers on their brand new kit were a blur as they seemed to be sprinting for everthing. Quick passing between Steven and Michael forced a corner that Michael took. The ball flew across the area, everyone missed it, except Seb, ghosting in at the far post to plant the ball into the net for his second goal. Brandon was driving forward on the right passing well to his team mates, except on one occasion when he unleashed a long distance bullet of a shot that flew into the top corner - a great goal. Steven and Josh were everywhere ensuring that the defence was covered, Steven was very unlucky not to open his Torpedo account as his powerful left foot shot across the goal keeper, hit the inside of the post and was scrambled away to safety. Adriano and Louie were solid in defence producing some strong tackles, and Jamie made another brilliant save and then a fantastic punch to clear his lines from the resulting corner. In the closing stages the boys were beginning to tire, but Billy, Adriano and Michael worked an opening for Josh to round off a great team display with a well taken fourth goal. The final whistle went, the Torpedoes had got some points on the board, if they continue to play like this more will follow. Man of the Match - Jamie. A great confidence boosting performance. Goals :- Seb (2), Brandon, Josh. Binfield Torpedoes vs Binfield Arrows 15/09/07Binfield Arrows 4 : 2 Binfield Torpedoes.10.00 kick off. Saturday 15th Sept 2007. Venue : Stubbs Lane. League Match. Conditions : Sunny, pitch firm. Attendance - 30. This time last year the Torpedoes rolled over without a fight and lost the game against the Arrows three nil. Today, although defeated again, the Torpedoes can hold their heads up high as they made the Arrows work exceptionally hard for their victory, and on another day could have earned a draw or a even a win from an exciting and entertaining game at Stubbs Lane. First Half Started well, with Billy, Josh and Michael repelling early Arrows' pressure. Steven then made a great run down the left to send over a cross that Adriano converted with a neat flick to give the Torpedoes an early lead. Unfortunately, the Torpedoes could not hold and build on their lead, as the Arrows' striker was not closed down quickly enough as he fired in a strike that hit the underside of the bar and into the net. The goal seemed to demoralise the Torpedoes and was quickly followed by another soft goal that gave the Arrows the advantage. A long shot that bounced unkindly for Jamie was to mark the end of a bad patch for the Torpedoes as the Arrows took control with a 3 - 1 lead. Torpedoes' supporters in the crowd feared the worst, but the boys proved they are made of sterner stuff. Another great run from Steve finished with a precision pass to Louie who turned to fire home and give the Torpedoes fresh impetus. Half time arrived and the Torpedoes were still very much in the game, but 2- 3 down. Second Half Was a great spectacle for the crowd, real end to end stuff with the Torpedoes forcing the Arrows back. The referee's fitness was called into question as he struggled hard to keep up with the pace of the game - such was the speed of play from both teams. The Torpedoes were defending high up the pitch, with Josh acting as a brilliant sweeper, to stop counter attacks, and move the ball forward with purpose. The Arrows second half keeper had an inspired game producing four great saves from Seb, Brandon, Steven and Adriano. The Torpedoes forced numerous corners but couldn't quite find that vital finishing touch. Still an equalizer seemed almost inevitable, but some fantastic Arrows' defending, especially from their right back, managed to thwart the Torpedoes' efforts on goal. Eventually the Torpedoes pushed everyone forward in a desperate last charge for a goal - only to be picked off on the break to eventually lose the game 4-2. The boys should not feel downhearted by this result, they lost the game, but their determination and quality of play will surely get them some points soon. Man of the match - Steve. - Never gave up and was always causing problems to the opposition. Binfield Torpedoes vs Pinewood Pumas 08/09/07Binfield Torpedoes 0 - 3 Pinewood Pumas

First half: When the new season fixture list was published, probably the last team the Torpedoes would want to face on the opening day was the previous season's Champions. In the first half it was difficult to tell which team were the current Champions. The boys played really well, playing some great football, creating numerous chances and most importantly defending with great determination and resolve. The two new players slotted in well and the team seemed full of confidence and drive. The Torpedoes defended so well that the opposition were reduced to no more than a couple of half chances. Going forward, the crossbar and post came to the Pumas' rescue and on another day the Torpedoes could have possibly taken a deserved lead in a very entertaining and close fought first half. The whistle went, and the half ended all square.
Second Half: With the policy of equal minutes on the pitch for every player the strong first half formation had to be adjusted. Unfortunately the wheels came off very early after the reshuffle with Pinewood taking advantage and scoring a good opener, followed by a quick second goal that was to prove a mountain that even the Torpedoes could not climb. Despite this the boys continued to play good football and never gave up in their quest to get back into the game. Towards the end the boys conceded a third goal on the break as they pressed forward seeking a way back into the game.
A three nil loss looks bad on paper but many positives can be taken from this game, especially the first half performance and that of the two new players who were playing their first competitive game for the Torpedoes.
Man of the match : Michael |
