Conditions :  Sunny & Cold.  Pitch muddy.

Attendance : 18

Binfield Players : Adriano  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

First Half.

The Torpedoes rubber stamped their promotion to the 'A' division with another solid performance. Josh scored the opening goal within the first minute with another special strike that is becoming his trademark - he doesn't do tap ins !  Pinewood had chances to level, Jamie diving to his right to push a firm shot round the post. Michael and Billy were defending well and Ollie, Angus and Louie were all action in midfield. Louie had a half chance that went just wide as the Torpedoes continued to attack. Billy showed a good turn of speed and strength to shepherd a Pinewood move away from Jamie's goal. A great passing move between Louie and Ollie ended with a shot from Josh that hit the bull's-eye in the adjacent archery field, just to prove he is fallible after all.

Second Half.

Jamie was released from goal with Adriano and Louie sharing the goal keeping duties. Josh won the ball in midfield and sent Michael through on goal, he saw Seb in a better position, passed, and Seb calmly placed the ball across the advancing keeper, proving you don't have to break the back of the net to score. Ollie went on one of his powerful breaks and fed Billy to strike a firm shot that rebounded off the post.  Adriano was on hand to finish off the move to give the Torpedoes a three - nil lead. Pinewood refused to give up and scored a very good goal themselves. The final whistle went and the boys celebrated a hard fought victory.

All nine of the squad should feel very proud of their achievements this first half of the season. Unbeaten in nine games, they have played attacking football, showed great teamwork and spirit and have always been very entertaining to watch. Special mention must go to Steve and Trevor who have turned a real mixed bunch of characters into a great little team. The Torpedoes fully deserve their promotion to the 'A' division and we hope they will meet the new challenge with their usual enthusiasm and sense of fun.

Goals : - Josh, Seb,  Adriano.

Men of the match - Adriano  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh, Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.  (all of them !)

A game of two halves, one bad, one good.

First Half.

In the first half the Torpedoes were a shadow of the team that had played so well the previous week. The boys didn't seem to be "up for this one" and the opposition were quicker and more determined. Apart from a couple of half chances the play was predominantly in or around the Torpedoes' penalty area. Pinewood were putting so much pressure on the defence that Ollie, Angus were almost overwhelmed. Jamie was quick to spot the danger - rushing from his goal to clear the ball like a sweeper. The Torpedoes were on the receiving end of concerted attacks and only a combination of last ditch defending and wayward shooting saved the boys from going two or three goals down. Even when Pinewood got past Jamie the ball came back off the bar to be scrambled to safety. The management were praying for the half time whistle.

Second Half.

With a stern half time team talk and a few home truths the team took to the field as if transformed !  Adriano slotting in at left back, and to his credit kerbing his normal attacking nature, stopped all the Pinewood attacks down the left. Josh helping his defence was starting to control the game from the back. Michael and Billy looked different players from the first half. Louie, Ollie and Seb were bossing the midfield. Michael was now driving straight for goal whenever he got the ball and was unlucky not to score himself before helping get the ball into the penalty area where Louie struck a powerful left footer into the roof of the net. The goal seemed to demoralise the opposition and the Torpedoes continued to press forward to make the game safe. Seb must have thought he'd scored only for a desperate save to paw the ball off the line to safety. Finally, Billy broke down the left and sent over the kind of cross that every defence hates, hard, low and six yards out from goal. The defender missed the ball, waiting at the far post was Seb, who calmly stroked the ball into the back of the net for a very cool finish.

The final whistle went and the Torpedoes march on into the quarter finals.... with the distinct possibility of playing a much more local team.

Binfield Torpedoes - Lower Early Predators 02/12/2006

Binfield Torpedoes 3 - 1 Lower Early Predators

10.00 kick off.   Saturday 2nd Dec 2006.   Venue : Stubbs Lane

Conditions :  Sunny & Cold.  Pitch wet, very muddy

Attendance - 25

Having not played a competitive game for three weeks there was a slight concern that the Torpedoes may have been a bit rusty or not match fit. Maybe the rest did them good, as they produced their best team performance so far this season.

First Half.

The game started off brightly with both teams showing their attacking intentions. A good move from Lower Earley put their striker one on one with Jamie. He raced from his goal line to bravely gather the ball, only to concede a harsh free kick for being outside his area. The resulting free kick was played into the box and volleyed home at the far post. Going a goal down did not affect the boys' attitude, the heads did not drop.... they were determined to get back into the game. The Torpedoes have scored many goals this season, but they will find it hard to match the equalizer that Josh produced midway through the first half. Picking the ball up in his own penalty area he advanced the whole length of the pitch, skipping round tackles, using his speed and strength to keep the ball, before unleashing a left foot shot that flew into the back of the net. Five minutes later, helped by good runs off the ball, from Adriano and Billy, Josh scored his second and near identical goal, just to prove the first one was no fluke. The first half ended with the Torpedoes in front.

Second Half.

With the pitch doing a very good impression of a First World War battlefield, it was the Torpedoes who had the necessary power and muscle required in midfield. The team now seemed to click, and the strength of Michael, Louie, Seb, Ollie and Billy in midfield was proving too much for an opposition that seemed to be tiring on the heavy surface. The Torpedoes were winning the midfield battle and creating chance after chance. For long periods the Torpedoes were camped in the Lower Earley half. Michael had a shot tipped round the post with a spectacular one handed save. Josh tried to curl the ball into the top corner, and he must have thought he'd got his hat-trick only for another remarkable save to keep the game close. Billy, Ollie and Seb all had good shots, Michael had a header on target but they just couldn't get past the Lower Earley keeper, who was having an inspired game. There were at least five goal mouth scrambles with Adriano unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions, with the ball sticking in the mud. Finally in the closing stages the Torpedoes made the game safe as another goal mouth scramble was converted by Seb, his brand new white boots proving a sound investment.

Special mention must be given to Angus who easily gave his best performance in a Torpedo shirt. Great positional play, determined tackling, and covering at the back, not afraid to see the ball out for a throw or a corner ensuring that Jamie's goal was protected. His partnership at the back with Ollie was the solid platform the Torpedoes needed to go forward in search of goals. On another day he would surely have won Man of the Match..... but both Josh's goals were a bit special !

Binfield Players : Adriano  Angus, Billy, Jamie, Josh,  Louie, Michael, Ollie, Seb.

Goals : - Seb, Josh (2.)

Man of the match - Josh.
